The great Panama Canal, a beautiful journey!

When it comes to historical sites, the Panama Canal is one of the most infamous in the world. People have immigrated to America via the isthmus of Panama since 8,000 BC. Throughout history many leaders have wanted a sea level isthmus crossing to be built. A project was begun for building of a canal in 1880, but disease and pestulence ended the project after seven years.

Upon Panama’s independence from Columbia, the United States was granted the rights to construct a canal in 1904. The canal was finished and reading for transit use in 1914. The Panama Canal encompasses fifty miles that runs from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. Three lock steps advance ships through the canal in order to transition from one ocean to the other. People are working all year long to enlarge the canal, and there is a major project of enlargement in the near future.

Seven days a week guided tours are available on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Meanwhile the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal offers unguided tours between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Some recommend renting a car and driving to the Gatun locks. The Gatun locks is where the Atlantic ocean entrance is, and these are the largest locks out of all of the locks within the Panama Canal. Once you get there, you can see the ships coming in from the Caribbean side, this is going to give you the best look possible!
