David is the third largest of the Panama cities, lying on the David River. It is also the capital of the province of Chiriqui. It was established as a gold prospecting town in the 1730s and the population had grown to more than hundred thousand. David is the transit point for traveling to Bocas del Toro, Cerro Punta, and Boquete due to its situation on the Inter-American Highway. The main activities of the city are cattle raising, sugar refining, soap making, clothing, shoe, furniture, and ceramics.
